Regulation and integration of energy storage

Energy storage presents new challenges and opportunities in progressively decarbonized electricity systems. At different sizes, centralized or distributed energy storage can provide services to system and network operators, and benefit different actors, as generators, consumers and prosumers participating in electricity markets. In this session we will review the different kind of services provided by storage, the implications of ownership and operation of storage installations, the need of adapting wholesale electricity market rules at different time-scales, from capacity to ancillary services markets, and the importance of having new tariff designs and support renewable self-generation mechanisms to improve the efficient integration of storage. Illustrations with case studies from EU and US jurisdictions will be included.
