Dispatch and clustering of ancillary services from distributed storage

The provision of ancillary services to power grids is traditionally planned by determining the operation of large conventional power plants with a centralized scheduling problem. In view of the displacement of conventional generation in favor of production from distributed renewables, and the fact that distributed energy resources (DERs) and storage are mostly connected at medium and low voltage levels, a centralized scheduling approach might become intractable due to the large number of involved state and decision variables. This part of the seminar illustrates alternative approaches discussed in the recent literature, where the coordination of DERs’ operations is pursued in a bottom-up manner with the objective of satisfying constraints of local grids and achieve targets implicitly beneficial for power system operations, foremost dispatching the power flow of distribution systems.
