Application of Model Predictive Control Algorithm on a Hydro Turbine Governor Control

Many of the turbine governors currently in use operate based on Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers. The use of PID controllers is widespread primarily because of their extensive applicability to a variety of single input single output (SISO) applications. However, classical PID controllers have disadvantages, i.e. resiliency to disturbances and uncertainties and integral windup. In this regard, controller based on model predictive control (MPC) theory, is developed and implemented in MATLAB to offer an alternative approach to control hydro turbines, avoiding the problems associated with PID controllers. The main advantages of the MPC controller are that constraints are considered during controller design phase and the transition from SISO to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) application is straightforward. In addition, linear simulation model of a small-scale hydro power plant, which is used for the process simulation purposes in MATLAB, is also presented in this paper.
