Steady State Analysis and Control of a MMC HVDC-Link operated in parallel with HVAC-Systems

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is considered to be an effective alternative for long transmission systems. Beside pure HVDC-lines hybrid HVAC/HVDC transmission systems are an attractive alternative. With the replacement of an HVAC-systems of an existing transmission line the transport capacity can be increased. Due to the proximity of HVDC- and HVAC lines inductive and capacitive coupling effects are present and therefore a fundamental frequency component appears in the HVDC-system. This paper investigates the influence of fundamental frequency coupling on a HVDC-link driven by a modular multilevel converter (MMC). Furthermore two control systems for the reduction of coupling effects are proposed and tested. Simulations are carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC.
