Voltage Source Converter subject to Large Decrease of Short-Circuit Capacity: a Case Study

Previous works have investigated the stability of a Voltage Source Converter (VSC) connected to a weak AC grid. Some publications focus on the destabilizing effect of the Phase Locked Loop (PLL) of the VSC. An adaptive vector control has been also proposed to ensure stable VSC behavior in weak AC grid conditions. Nevertheless, the investigation is made with known, constant
AC grid conditions and the behaviour of the VSC in response to a sudden large drop of the Short-Circuit Capacity has not been investigated. This is the focus of this paper.

A case study will be reported involving a simple test
system, which consists of a point-to-point HVDC
link connected to a Thévenin equivalent of the AC system.
